Executive Committee

Tanvir Ahmed

After leaving school I ventured into becoming an electronics engineer with City & Guild qualifications and in 1990 I joined the prison service as a volunteer to serve the need of Muslims and in 1992 was taken on a sessional. I was employed at the turn of the century and in 2007 became the first Muslim Chaplain on merit to be transferred to Chelmsford from Devon as the coordinating Chaplain.

As a self taught Imam I felt the need to gain written qualifications and completed a diploma in Islamic Studies at Ar-Rahman Academy in 2007, and compiled 10 short books for the use of Muslim prisoners.

I believe my greatest strengths are a balance approach to my religions approachability and honesty irrelevant of religion, creed or sexuality. I have a genuine caring nature which is stronger than any religious beliefs I hold, this allows me to communicate clearly and provides a clear transparent thought process which is not clouded by any preconceived opinions or beliefs. Faith is like any belief, it must be moderate and accepting to all others, something I feel I am able to demonstrate not only through my position but also through my personality.

Besides being an electronics engineer for 20yrs, I was also a member of the Area Criminal Justice Strategy Committee, Chair of Devon Racial Equality Council, Magistrate (declined due to conflict of interest), interviewed to become a member of the House of Lords, nominated for an OBE, School Governor, Linen business with five outlets, MCA Trustee, Vice chair of Al-Falah, Founder of Humdardh, built community links by presenting awareness around crime and drugs. Just recently I was honoured to be elected Chair of MCA. I am also married with four children.
